Free Habit Tracker Apps: What Each Free Plan Includes
By Sebastian Röhl, creator of HabitKit
8 min read Published
Yes, you can track habits for free, for as long as you like. HabitKit is free for four habits on iPhone and Android, with no ads, no account and no trial that runs out. The free plans of Habitify, everyday, Strides and Do Habits each stop at three habits, and Streaks has no free version at all.
The number of habits is only half of a free plan, though. The other half is what you can do with them: whether reminders, backups and your own history are part of the deal, or held back to make you upgrade.
Full disclosure: HabitKit is our app, and we think its free plan is the best one on this page. Every fact below comes from each app's store listing, pricing page or help center, checked on the date at the top, and the page says where the other apps do better. There are no affiliate links.
HabitKit and the apps worth a look instead

- you count, measure or quit habits, not only tick them off
- you want backups and export without paying for them
-
Pick Habitify if
- you want an Apple Watch and Mac app beside your phone
-
Pick everyday if
- you want to check off habits in a web browser too
Written by the maker of HabitKit, who wants you in the app that suits you. Habitify and everyday are named for comparison only; HabitKit is not affiliated with their makers. Prices and features come from the US App Store, Google Play and each developer's own site on the date above.

Free Plans At A Glance
| App | Free habits | Time limit | Ads | Platforms | To unlock more |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| HabitKit | 4 | None | No | iPhone, Android | Pro, monthly, yearly or a one-time Lifetime |
| Habitify | 3, more can be viewed but not logged | None | None listed | iPhone, Mac, Apple Watch, Android | Subscription or lifetime |
| everyday | 3 | None | None listed | iPhone, Mac, Apple Watch, Android, web | Subscription or lifetime |
| Strides | 3 | None | No | iPhone, Mac, Apple Watch, Android | Strides Plus |
| Do Habits | 3 | None | Not stated | iPhone, Apple Watch | Subscription or lifetime |
"None listed" means the Google Play listing carries no "Contains ads" label; the App Store has no such label, so that's the best public signal there is. Streaks isn't in the table because it has no free version: it's a $5.99 purchase with nothing to unlock.
What HabitKit's Free Plan Includes
Four habits, and everything you need to keep them going:
- Every way to track. Yes / No, Count and Measure habits in your own units, quit habits with a daily limit, and every schedule from daily to weekly and monthly goals.
- A reminder for each habit, plus a daily check-in reminder.
- Notes and categories, all three dashboard views, themes and share images.
- Your data, kept safe. Automatic daily backups on the phone, a daily backup to your own iCloud (iPhone) or Google Drive (Android), and export and import of your whole history.
- No account and no ads. Your habits stay on your phone.

Export, import and backups are free in HabitKit, for every habit you have ever tracked.
Pro adds unlimited habits, home screen widgets, charts, up to three reminders per habit and the dashboard display options. The full list of what's free and what's Pro is in the help center.
Why We Think It's The Best Free Plan
One more habit than the rest. Four free habits against three may sound small, but it's a third more room. In the best-known study of habit formation, a new daily habit took around 66 days on average to become automatic, and much longer for some people (how long it really takes). Each habit needs your attention for weeks, so a few at a time is what most people can carry, and four leaves room for one to quit as well.
Nothing about how you track is cut down. Count and Measure habits fill a day's tile partway as you go, quit habits count clean days, and notes sit next to the days they describe. A free plan that only tracks yes or no works for "meditate" and falls apart at "drink two litres of water".
Your history is never held hostage. Backups and export are free. Strides, for comparison, keeps data export for its paid plan. A habit tracker is a record you build for years, so the free version should let you keep it and take it with you.
It doesn't run out. There is no trial clock and nothing locks after 30 days. You'll see the Pro screen after setting up, after an app update and around New Year, and otherwise only when you tap something that needs Pro.
If you need a fifth habit, the + button opens the Pro screen instead of the editor. Nothing is deleted, and you can archive a habit to make room while keeping all of its history.
Where The Other Apps Are Better
- More devices. Habitify, everyday and Strides have Apple Watch and Mac apps, and everyday runs on the web too. HabitKit is an iPhone and Android app.
- Sync. HabitKit doesn't sync between devices, free or paid; it backs up instead. If you want the same habits on a phone, a watch and a computer, the other apps here are built for that.
- Widgets and charts. HabitKit's home screen widgets and its charts and statistics screen are part of Pro. The free plan shows each habit's grid and its streak.
The Other Free Plans, Briefly
Habitify: Three Habits, One Reminder Each
Habitify's free plan covers 3 habits with one reminder each. A recent update lets free users create more, but habits past the limit are view-only. Apple Health sync needs Habitify Pro.
Everyday: Three Habits, Free Forever
The Google Play listing says it plainly: "everyday is free forever (up to 3 habits)". It runs on phone, watch and the web.
Strides: Three Goals Or Habits
"It's free forever to track your top three goals and habits," says Strides' help center. Unlimited habits, sync and data export are part of Strides Plus.
Do Habits: Three Habits On iPhone
The app once called Done allows 3 habits on the free version, on iPhone and Apple Watch. There is no Android version.
Free Or Without A Subscription?
They are different questions. Free means you never pay. Without a subscription can also mean paying once, like Streaks at $5.99 or HabitKit's Lifetime purchase. If paying once is fine, our habit trackers without a subscription compares the one-time prices too.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is HabitKit Free?
Yes. HabitKit is free for four habits on iPhone and Android, with no time limit, no ads and no account. Reminders, notes, quit habits, backups and export are all included. HabitKit Pro adds unlimited habits, widgets and charts, as a monthly or yearly subscription or a one-time Lifetime purchase.
What Is The Best Free Habit Tracker App For iPhone?
We think it's HabitKit, and we're biased, so here are the facts: HabitKit allows four habits free, and Habitify, everyday, Strides and Do Habits allow three. Streaks has no free version.
What Is The Best Free Habit Tracker App For Android?
We think it's HabitKit: four free habits, quit habits with daily limits, free backups to Google Drive, and the same app if you ever move to an iPhone. Habitify, everyday and Strides also run on Android, with three free habits each.
What Happens To My Habits If I Need More Than Four?
Nothing is lost. The fifth habit needs Pro, but you can archive one to make room, and archived habits keep all of their history. If Pro ever lapses, habits past the fourth are locked rather than deleted.
Does A Free Habit Tracker Work As Well As A Paid One?
For a few habits, yes. Logging, reminders and a picture of your progress are what keep a habit going, and all three are free in HabitKit. Paid plans mostly add more habits and more ways to look at them.
Final Thoughts
The best free plan is one you never have to leave. If you track a handful of habits, HabitKit's free plan covers you for good, with your history backed up and yours to export.
HabitKit is free on the App Store and Google Play.
